“Well I set off at 7.50am for my last big (and biggest) training ride so far. The plan was to cycle from Longridge (near Preston) to Clowne (near Chesterfield). After 9 miles I met up with another cyclist (James Bolton) who stayed with me until Horwich. His suggestion of stopping for an ice cream at Frederick’s was passed up as it was way too early for me! By the time I had made my way down the A6 to Manchester I was starving but decided not to stop until I was through Stockport. Hazel Grove was a nightmare for traffic and for the hunger. Made it to High Lane (about 50 miles) and stopped for a very welcome bacon butty and latte at a very nice café. I then set off again and hit one of my worst points on the Chapel-en-le-Frith/Whaley Bridge bypass. It was very monotonous and seemed to take forever. I then turned off the A6 and started to hit the real hills. This was much better than I thought and after passing through Peak Forest I felt a real sense of achievement. I stopped again at Baslow for welcome egg and chips and full fat coke as I could feel myself depleting (and I don’t want to waste away)! The 6 miles after Baslow were very slow and all seemed to be up hill, but after that there were some very pleasant down hills in to Chesterfield. I stopped to take a photo of the spire and tweet (@davedjordjevic / @tower2tower1) and then headed for Clowne. I was unsure as to whether the hills were really that bad or it was just because I had cycled 90 miles that they felt that way. I entered Clowne having completed 93 miles so decided that I may as well go for the 100 and cycled around for a bit until I hit 101 miles (see map). Had a few well earned beers at the Ashlea Club in the evening, where we are having a get together (BBQ, drinks and raffle on Sunday 29th July – please come along)!”
